Open Question: How do I know what cell phone to buy?
Open Question: GSM service provider in New York on existing Nokia for international tourist?
I would be traveling to NYC on a tourist visa for 3 months this Summer. I have a Nokia N79 that I plan to use. Could someone suggest any providers and their specific plans? My main usage would be to be in touch with my family (in my home country in Asia).
Please first read the below details on my expected usage:
1) I would buy a calling card from my country that allows me to make calls to my country at 60% cheaper rates if I call using a “toll-free” number or at 80% cheaper rates if I use a local number (to access international number). I am also told that some providers in USA charge a surcharge for dialing a toll-free number? Is it true?
2) International sms can be very expensive (unless someone has a plan to suggest). So I was planning to use “FRING” as my IM. How does IM work in USA? I find there are separate rates for IM and internet. How do these providers distinguish if I am using yahoo chat or using maybe yahoo email? Anyways I was thinking an unlimited text plan will be useless and as I would hardly text to any US numbers but instead would prefer an unlimited data so I can IM with my family in my home country at cheaper costs?
3) Last but not the least, will I be able to buy a sim over the counter? I am a tourist so would have no credit documents, no SSN and so on. How will I be able to buy a sim?
The only option I have shortlisted is T-Mobile sidekick prepaid as I get unlimited text and IM (still don’t understand how service providers ditinguish IM and data) and then use toll-free number to make international calls. But then it has local calling at 15c/min which is not that attractive.
Also, as the N79 has wi-fi, I was also wondering what are different wi-fi providers? Maybe I should not even take a unlimited data plan on the cell phone and rely on wi-fi for data? Though I am not in favour of this option.

I Met this guy at work like 3 months ago…. at a temp job.
We really kicked it off. he asked me for my cell phone number and if i had a boyfriend…
and i told him yes, but i said we can be friends and gave him my cell phone number anyways.
he texted me 1hr after we got off of work and said “hey its james ” and we texted for like 2hrs about nothing really. we hung out that weekend at his place, and watched movies and such. and at work we started getting closer. hanging out on every break, we worked as a team for EVERYTHING he requested working with me and no one else, and he’d look for me my friends said if he couldn’t find me, even on breaks he’d spend 5-7mins of his 15min break lookin 4 me if we got apart. We always worked together.. he’d smile at me, give me silly looks… and we’d stare into each others eyes a lot. Some of the people we work with asked if we were dating, even people who didn’t know us..but we’d say we’re just friends. we got along so well.. and than he got a girlfriend. and we hung out every other weekend we had off, because the other weekends his girlfriend came into town. He told me she is super jealous of me, and i told him to tell her there’s nothing to be jealous of and he smiled. i told him i wanted to meet her and he kinda hesitated about it. not sure why. and we went out to dinner a couple times.. we buy each other cigs and food and pop and such when we hang out.. he told me he didn’t wanna get hired on permanently if i wasn’t gonna get hired on either. He didnt wanna work without me he said, because he’d be bored. and than he said someone asked him if we were dating… and he said EXACTLY THIS.. “I told him..’ hmm no we’re just friends…’ ” than he smiled at me and started blushing and turned his head. IF HE SEEN ME WORKING IN A DIFFERENT AISLE he’d come down the aisle and poke me.. we’d both giggle. we have lots of silly pics together. we were basically best friends, but than work ended last week.. and i haven’t heard ANYTHING from him since friday.. i even tried texting 3 times since friday… but nothing… 
i dont know if his phone is off or not.. but i thought i’d share that with you… if you have any idea if he likes me or not please let me know. i know he knows and only he knows but i dont wanna ask him really…im 21 he’s 23.
I know I just asked this but i only had 1 answer and i need more info
