Me and my fiance have a major issue right now. Her oldest son. He’s 15 and he thinks he’s a man. He refuses to listen to anything I or his mother says or tells him to do. In the past few years he’s been constantly suspended from school time after time. He’s now on his 4th school in the past few years because he keeps getting suspended. I’m 40 and my fiance is 39. We’ve been dating about 6 years and are gonna be married in a little more than a month. We’ve been living together about the whole time and I’ve helped her raise her son but lately he’s gotten out of hand. I try to discipline him but her family doesn’t believe in “tough love” like my parents raised me with. They think you should just try and talk to him to reach him. He’s now living with his grandparents because he refuses to follow the rules in our house. Ok, with this last spell I took his cell phone, which we are paying for, and on it I found naked pics of himself that he has been sending to his so called little girlfriends. That was several weeks ago. Last night he called his mom asking for his phone back and she said she’d think about it. I told her he was not gonna get it back and she told me “you can’t punish him forever.” Personally I feel that a cell phone is a luxury not a necessity. I recently saw where a young guy had to register as a sex offender for the next 20 years for sending naked pics of himself. Sexting is the term they use today. But given his behavior and the fact that his mom doesn’t want to put her foot down to him can is she right? Can you not punish kids forever? Just a little more than a week ago he ran away from home and stayed gone all day which freaked his mom out but she now wants to give him his stuff back. She thinks I’m too hard on him. What do you guys think? As his future step-dad what rights do I have in disciplining him? Do I have a say so when it comes to her wanting to give him his stuff back so soon and how is that punishment?
