I am looking to move and had been checking on Craigslist for a few days and came across a beautiful 3 bedroom home for $800 monthly, which is in my price range. I responded to the ad through email and received a reply this morning around 5am. This is the reply exactly as I read it:

Thanks for the email and it is my gladness hearing from you. I am the owner of the house you are making inquiry of… Actually i resided in the house with my family, such as my wife and my only daughter before and presently we had packed due to my transfer from my working place and now situated in the( West Africa) My real intention was to sale the house, so l listed the property with realtor agent but my wife advice me not to do that, and l have asked the agent to remove the sign board in front of the house, l got a call from him that he has move down to UK. So l ask him to send back the keys/paperworks of my house to me in my present location., I decided to put it on rent and also put it in craigslist for rent for a year leasing and presently my house is still available for rent.Including the utilities like hydro, washer and security, it is furnished but if u which to move in with your furnishes no problem.

Pls i want you to note that i am a kind and honest man and also i spent a lot on my property that i want to give you for rent, i will want you to take absolute maintenance of my house and want you to treat it as your own, money is not the most important thing but i want you to keep it tidy all the time so that i will be glad to see it neat when i
come for a check up.

I got a little suspicious when he said he was in Africa and when I went to check for the ad on Craiglist, it had been removed. This is a scam I assume. Can’t we do anything on the internet without being scammed (if that’s what this is)?

It’s called Amber is Gone and well…just read and tell me what you think…this is not the beginning and it is only part of it..

I didn’t wear black because I was Goth or because I was dysfunctional. I wore it because I could. It just seemed natural to me. Like you just know you’re supposed to.
I told this to my therapist once, and she abruptly asked me if I missed Amber.
“Miss Jennifer,” I said calmly, “Have you ever seen someone kidnapped?”
“Well, no,” She responded in that therapist type voice that I hate.
“Oh?” I said as if this shocked me or even amused me in a sick little way. She run her hand through her hair self consciously.
“And did…” I leaned in closer, widening my eyes, imitating exactly the way she did, “did your father leave you when you needed him the most?”
I knew that her father hadn’t left her. There was a picture on her desk right in front of me of her family when she was graduating from college.
“Rayne, I-”
“Yeah, that’s what I thought, Miss Jennifer. This session is over,” I stalked out of her office.
How dare she ask me if I missed Amber! As if the expression I wore everyday didn’t advertise it! As if I’m not scarred for life from that incident on Main Street! How dare she!
I began to run down the sidewalk, getting dirty looks from everyone I bumped into. I knew exactly where I was going though. As I turned down a back road, the thought whispered in my mind that maybe I shouldn’t do it. It couldn’t possibly still be the way it-
I stopped short when it suddenly appeared right in front of me. The big white house Amber lived in on the outskirts of town, all it’s majestic glory gone. It looked slightly grey without the Wright family occupying it and the great laughter from Amber and her sister Halle that lived there. I could almost hear it if I tried hard enough.
I walked up to the screen door and pulled. It was unlocked. I tried the big door, and it was not. I hoped that the key they kept in the loose brick on the side of the house was still there. Yes! It was. I knew what I was doing was considered trespassing, breaking and entering, and probably lots of other things, but I was barely thinking this as the door slipped open with a sharp click! and I was in.
Everything was the same minus the nice furniture and appliances that used to fill the house. There was a rumor around the school that they had kept Amber’s room the same, and they hadn’t taken anything with them when the moved away. Just left it like it was when she left it. I didn’t believe it at first, but at that moment, I really wanted to. I wanted to open that door and everything be the same. The box of pizza we left on the bed that day she was taken because we were in a hurry to catch the sales at the little shops on Main Street. Her cell phone to be plugged in the wall like it always was. Boots in the floor, hairdryer dangling dangerously off the dresser but never falling, duffel bag packed and ready to stay the night at my house. I prayed and prayed for it to be like this when I went it. But I stopped at the door and got a flash of myself a year ago, standing in this exact place, rocking back and forth on my feet, hand on the doorknob, eyes closed and imagining that Amber was on the other side with her head in a book, eagerly anticipating my arrival.
I thrust the door open with all my strength. Dust flew everywhere, but there was nothing but the flowered wallpaper and the lime green walls I had become so familiar with. Everything was gone. I spun around and around, trying to find something that would give me a morsel of hope that Amber’s spirit was still in the room, but I got nothing. Collapsing into a dizzy heap on the floor, I put my head in my hands and cried.
