Voting Question: Question about the invention process?
I have a very solid invention/innovation “idea.” I need to take it to the next step. I have spoken with patent attorneys and I am a little discouraged by the initial costs (simple patent=10k+; mine is not simple) and odds of success. I have a college degree and an engineering and business background. I am certain that this invention will work and fill a need but it will take some doing.
FACTS
- It is a somewhat complicated innovation but it can work. It borrows on existing technology but uses it in a new and highly innovative way. To get to the prototype stage it will take a significant capital investment to do R&D which I do not have. The ROI will absolutely justify any initial expenses.
- I can sell or present my idea to executives (10+ years in Sales). The approach I would like to take is to see my invention and hand it over to a technology company so they can run with it (R&D; lawyers; marketing, etc.) and get a % or similar arrangement.
- Should I file a provisional patent? I personally cannot make a working prototype within the 1 year time period that a provisional patent allows me. My understanding is that in that case, I will lose all rights to it. I could probably make a simulation of “how it would work” during a demonstration within a year but it would not be the actual technology. It would involve circuits and communications equipment- again, the technology involved already exists but not in the way I want to use it. It will be a very unique and well received innovation.
WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Additional Details
FOR OBVIOUS REASONS I AM NOT GOING TO SHARE MY IDEA IN THIS TYPE OF FORUM. I THINK I WAS SPECIFIC ENOUGH TO SOLICIT GENERAL GUIDANCE.
YOU CAN SIMPLY THINK OF MY IDEA AS A NEW TYPE OF CELL PHONE. BIG COMPANIES HAVE TEAMS WORKING ON NEW DESIGNS/FEATURES- THINK OF MY IDEA ALONG THOSE LINES.
Resolved Question: which item should i get?
my birthday is coming up and im turning 12 (7th grade) and my parents usually spend about 100-120 dollars for a big gift and maybe a couple little gifts (plz dont say im spoiled cause im not!)
anyway i have been wanting to get a cellphone (not to be cool) because i sometimes make after school plans, and go to places and ALWAYS have to borrow ppl’s (my mom worries alot)
but i could also go on a “shopping spree” which would be helpful because my style has changed a little and i only have 2 pairs of jeans that i like!
i also have some pocket money i could maybe use
so i don’t know what to choose, but the cell phone gift means my parents pay for the plan for a year but after that i have to pay or use my next birthday money for another year!
plz be nice and give me ur opinions ![]()
oh and i dont care about being “popular” or “cool” i just feel more comfortable in clothes i like (pacsun outlet sales, ross, tjMAXX, maxrave)
thanxs
Resolved Question: How to Convice Parents for a New Cell Phone?
I’m really looking into the BlackBerry 35 Student Plan with Telus (Canada). I do admit I get bored with my phones easily, I got one last August and got a new one in March (we gave my first one to my grandma which she uses … so it didn’t go to waste). I have a 2 year contract with Virgin Mobile (LG Rumor), and I’m trying to convince my dad that he should take my phone and plan since his is 3 years old and pretty worn. He’s saying I have to finish my contract … but I’m pretty sure the BlackBerry sale is only on until September something … I want the BlackBerry Pearl for 0.00$. And, trust me, I’ve wanted a BlackBerry for a really long time.
Btw I pay my own cell phone bills every month, with my own money. So that has nothing to do with it. And I get pretty good grades.
thanks for any tips =).
